Four-Point Play Helps St. Cloud To 12-0

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Senior captain April Carlson hit one of the most clutch shots of her St. Cloud State career Thursday, December 23, overcoming a foul to drain a sideline three-pointer and adding the resultant free throw, a four-point play that put SCSU up 65-60 over Minnnesota State-Moorhead with one minute remaining.  In a game which featured 17 ties, the five-point differential was the largest spread at that point in the game and gave the Huskies enough momentum to propel them to their 12th win of the season 72-64.

The intense second half is the story of the game. After being outrebounded 23-30 and posting just a two point halftime lead of 36-34, the Huskies knew they would have to play harder to defeat the 2004-05 Northern Star conference champions, Minnesota State-Moorhead.  The Huskies were down 40-42 following a jumper by MSUM's Jessica Trautwein at the 17:21 mark of the second half, but answered with a Kayla Rengel three-pointer soon after to take a slim one-point lead. The Huskies would not give up the lead for the remainder of the game, although the score remained tight.

The Huskies continued with their game plan of getting the ball to center Erika Quigley whenever possible and driving to the hoop on most other occasions. Quigley finished the night with a season high 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Carlson's four-point play late in the game gave the Huskies just what they needed, the first scoring cushion of the game. They managed to wind down the clock and hit 6-of-8 free throws in the remaining minute of the game.

The win puts SCSU's undefeated streak at 12 games and gave the Huskies a taste of the competition they will see in the upcoming weeks. The Huskies shot just 37.7% from the field and an uncharacteristic low of 21.4% from three-point range. Despite grabbing 49 rebounds in the game, SCSU struggled to gain enough boards, being outrebounded 49-57.

Quigley led the team with her 32 points from 12 of 24 field goals and led all players with 15 boards. Quigley also posted seven blocked shots. Rengel had 11 rebounds, seven points and three steals, while Francis had 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
