WINONA, Minn.-Winona State senior center John Smith took care of the WSU scoring record quickly as the No. 5-ranked Warriors took care of Concordia (Minn.) in an 84-59 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory Friday, February 15. Smith scored the first four points of the game and quickly established himself as the Warriors' all-time leading scorer, breaking the record of David Zellmann. Smith went on to score 13 points in the first half and finished the game with 22 points and now has 2,079 points.
Smith went on to fill out the statistics sheet with eight rebounds, two assists, five blocked shots and one steal.
For the Warriors, they put the clamps on the Golden Bears in the first half, holding them scoreless in the last 9:35 of the opening perid and taking a commanding halftime lead 47-26.
In the second half the Warriors kept up the pace and outscored CSP 37-33 in the final 20 minutes of play.
David Johnson led the Warriors with 23 points and Jonte Flowers netted 18 to round out the double-figure scoring for Winona State.
The win extended the Warriors' season winning streak to 20 games and their NSIC winning streak to 45 games.
