ABERDEEN, S.D.–ESPN's award-winning primetime newsmagazine E:60, on hiatus since November, will return with five weekly, original episodes beginning Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. EDT. The program, which launched in October 2007, combines investigative reporting, in-depth profiles of intriguing sports personalities and features on emerging star athletes. These stories are presented in a fresh and innovative format that incorporates producer/correspondent meetings.
In the return episode, E:60 reports on Don Meyer, a college basketball coach from South Dakota whose life took a tragic turn while he was on the cusp of surpassing Bob Knight for the most men’s basketball wins in NCAA history.
One of the most compelling college basketball stories of the year is one that most people don't know about. It concerns Meyer, 64-year-old coach at NCAA, Division II Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. Just as Meyer’s 38-year coaching career was about to be validated by surpassing Knight’s record, he was seriously injured in a highway accident. Not only were Meyer's injuries life-threatening, but doctors also discovered he had cancer – and that it was inoperable.
The untouchable milestone Meyer was about to reach became a footnote in a season where his life would change forever, where the healing would go beyond his physical being and where basketball evolved from mere passion to Meyer's salvation. E:60, in a special report by Buster Olney, captures the depths of Coach Meyer's challenges from the wreck, to the hospital bed, to the sidelines where Meyer attempts his return with just one leg, and to the triumphant moment when Meyer reaches coaching's greatest pinnacle.
